Our medical cover in practice

The plan on paper is one thing; how it performs on the day is what matters. These case studies show how Alba EMS has planned for, and delivered, medical provision at real events across Scotland.

Comprehensive medical provision for a major open-road cycling event

When a major charity cycling sportive attracted more than 6,000 participants across a challenging open-road course, Alba EMS was entrusted to design and deliver a complete, clinician-led medical operation covering the event village, feed stations and the entire route. The scale of the event required a resilient and highly coordinated medical response capable of managing everything from minor injuries and medical presentations to serious emergencies occurring anywhere across a large operational footprint.

To meet this challenge, Alba EMS deployed an integrated medical structure combining strategic command, senior clinical leadership and mobile response assets within a single, accountable service. The operation included doctors, nurses, paramedics, EMTs and first responders, supported by ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, a paramedic response motorbike and dedicated logistics personnel. A fully equipped medical centre was established on site with the capability to assess, treat and monitor multiple patients simultaneously, while mobile teams provided rapid access to incidents occurring along the course and at remote locations.

Throughout the event, command staff maintained continuous oversight from the control room, ensuring effective coordination between venue-based resources, road response teams and local healthcare partners. More than 60 patients were assessed and treated during the event, covering a broad range of medical and traumatic presentations. Where onward care was required, Alba EMS clinicians worked directly with local hospitals and specialist trauma services to ensure safe and seamless patient pathways.

The success of the deployment demonstrated Alba EMS's ability to deliver large-scale event medical cover through robust planning, experienced clinicians, effective command and control, and flexible operational resources. By providing a complete end-to-end medical solution, we enabled the event organisers to focus on delivering a successful experience for participants, confident that a professional and responsive healthcare team was protecting the event from start to finish.

Advanced trauma care on a remote coastal cycling route

A serious collision between a cyclist and a car on a remote coastal route demanded advanced trauma care in torrential rain, followed by helicopter transfer directly to a Major Trauma Centre.

During a cycling event involving approximately 60 participants on a remote coastal route in Scotland, Alba EMS provided medical cover with a Paramedic and Emergency First Responder deployed in a Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV). Operating in challenging conditions with torrential rain and exposed shoreline terrain, the team responded to a serious collision involving a cyclist and a car, arriving on scene within five minutes of the incident.

A rapid trauma assessment identified significant injuries requiring immediate intervention, with the crew controlling haemorrhage, administering oxygen therapy, establishing vascular access and continuously monitoring the patient while preparing them for transport. Following stabilisation, the patient was carefully packaged for evacuation and protected from the adverse weather using specialist equipment carried by Alba EMS, including a Blizzard Survival Wrap and chemical warming blankets.

On arrival of the statutory ambulance service, Alba EMS worked collaboratively to continue advanced trauma care before supporting the Air Ambulance Paramedics with ongoing stabilisation and patient transfer. Due to the remote location and severity of injuries, the decision was made to transport the patient directly to a Major Trauma Centre by helicopter. Alba EMS personnel assisted with moving and loading the patient onto the aircraft before handing over to the flight crew, ensuring continuity of care throughout the incident.
